Husband is jailed for planting bomb at rivals house.
Guiseppe Ammirato, a jealous husband, who planted an improvised explosive device outside the home of a man who was seeing his wife, has been jailed for 45 months.
Guiseppe Ammirato, 37, was said to have finally snapped after discovering his wife Renata was continuing to see a married man she once had an affair with. Ammirato of Poppyfields, Bedford, was wracked with torment after discovering she was receiving text messages from Anthony Stanley. One text sent to the wife, which her husband discovered, read: ‘I love you.’
Finally, Ammirato put together an incendiary device using a butane gas canister, batteries, a micro switch and firework material. He went to the home of rival Mr Stanley and left the device in a bag, wrapped in Christmas paper, by the front gate outside his home in Gladstone Road, Bedford last November.
Luton Crown Court heard that it was Mr Stanley’s wife who found the device after returning to the terraced house with their two young children. As a result, the whole of the street, which is close to Bedford town centre, had to be evacuated while a bomb disposal team attended the scene to make the device safe.
Later, an expert who examined the components that had been used for the device said it was possible it could have produced a fireball or a jet of fire.
Ammirato pleaded guilty to making an explosive substance. Bozzie Sheffi, prosecuting, told the court the defendant had been married to Renata for 13 years and they had a son. In 2002, she had met Mr Stanley through her work and they became friends. Her own marriage was in difficulty and Miss Sheffi said the wife and Mr Stanley began a ‘full blown’ relationship during 2007. She said at some point Mr Ammirato moved away from the marital home, but came back in 2008. He understood the relationship to be over, but then discovered his wife was continuing to see Mr Stanley. Mr Ammirato was heard to say he would kill Mr Stanley if the relationship continued.
The court then heard how, on November 25 last year, the defendant and his wife left to go to work at around 8.30 that morning and didn’t see each other until the evening. That afternoon, at around 4pm, Mr Stanley’s wife Samantha returned with their two children to their home, having collected them from school. About an hour later, she noticed the front garden gate was open and a Tesco carrier bag with its top tied up had been placed on the ground. She went out and, looking inside, could see an object wrapped in Christmas type paper.
Judge Bevan was told that three days after the device had been left outside Mr Stanley’s home, the defendant was arrested and his house was searched. Miss Sheffi said his laptop was seized and it was found it had been used to research how to construct home-made explosive devices. He had also downloaded videos from You Tube which showed improvised devices exploding. Kevin Molloy, defending, said “This is a case that is a crime of passion rather than a crime of hatred. It’s emotion that has got in the way of reason.” The barrister said it was never his client’s intention to cause any injury, but to leave ‘a serious calling card’ for a man who Mr Ammirato believed was not staying away from his wife. “He is very, very sorry for what he has done and the fear he may have caused this family.”
Passing sentence, Judge Bevan said “You reacted to your wife’s ongoing affair in a wholly unacceptable and potentially dangerous way by leaving a potentially viable device outside the front gate of the man who was having an affair with your wife.” He jailed Ammirato for three years, nine months.
